Be Aware and Prepared

First and foremost, our prayers go out to those in India and Nepal where just yesterday (9/18/11) a 6.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the region. In September alone, eight earthquakes measuring 6.4 or above have hit various countries around the World, and over 750 measurable quakes in the last 7 days were recorded in the USA alone. The underlined links will take you to related information websites.

Since teaching emergency preparedness classes to the community, I’m often asked about natural occurrences that have and continue to happen, and most importantly – how to prepare for what may come. I am by no means claiming to be an expert, so please do your own research!   Now then, class is in session -

With our Earth changing constantly and presenting us with everything from black-outs, earthquakes and tornadoes to hurricanes and tsunami’s, it’s become clear that we all need to be as well informed and prepared as possible. This reminds me of something my Grandmother used to tell me, “Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance,” which I apply to as much of my life as I can…

1) Educate Yourself - With current planetary adjustments such as: the North Pole shifting an average of 40 miles a year sea levels and temperature rising, hurricanes, active volcanoes,  power outages, and constant Earthquakes  – it’s a good idea to become aware about what natural occurrences could happen in your area. Astrological forces may be affecting Earth energies as well, such as the controversial comet Elenin and Nibiru.

2) Be Prepared - NASA sent out an internal video message to all their employees in June of 2011  letting them know of this importance. For whatever reason prompted them to do so, we should all take it as yet another wake up call to action and get ourselves and families prepared as well. We also recommend you take a CPR course, or First Aid & Safety through the Red Cross or your local community college.
Print and use the NLS Emergency Preparedness Guide and shopping list, below. Also, here is a great link to quickly purchase a first aid kits. Remember to keep a small kit in your car as well! ..available at camping supply stores. Check out this new app called Quake SOS

3) Keep a Positive Attitude – Even when emergencies arise, the best thing we can do for our own well being and so that we are helpful to others, is to create and be at peace. Whether you already have a practice of relaxation or meditation, or have never taken a yoga class, the Triangle Breathing Technique can help you in many ways. To help make it a habit, start by doing this practice after each meal.Try this relaxing practice anywhere at anytime you feel even the slightest bit of stress or anxiety and you’ll be amazed by the results.
Triangle Breathing with Affirmation –
Inhale
through the nose and mentally repeat “I Am Peace” 2-3 times (about 6-10 seconds).
Hold
your breath in and mentally repeat “I Am Love” 2-3 times, then

Exhale slowly through the mouth while mentally affirming “I Am Joy” 2-3 times.
Repeat this sequence 3 times each time you practice, at least 3 times a day.

It’s with awareness of what has already been taking place in regards to Earth changes that posting this blog is intended to empower you with the knowledge to make your own preparedness decisions and in doing so, dispel or reduce anxiety and fear. Among the many phone calls, texts, emails and conversations, I emphasize that this message comes from a place of love for all people, animals and our Planet.

I encourage you to embrace the understanding that with our positive mindset, intuitive guidance and preparation, we have the power to better control our circumstances and overall outcome…no matter what the challenge. There are countless survival stories to this account.

With Love, Peace and Awarenes
~ Anna

NLS Emergency Preparedness Guide and Shopping List

Preparation and Maintenance of your Kit
Just as important as putting your supplies together is maintaining them so they are safe to use when needed.

Here are some tips to keep your supplies ready and in good condition:

  • Keep canned foods in a dry place where the temperature is cool.
  • Store boxed food in tightly closed plastic or metal containers to protect from pests and to extend its shelf life.
  • Throw out any canned good that becomes swollen, dented, or corroded.
  • Use foods before they go bad, and replace them with fresh supplies.
  • Place new items at the back of the storage area and older ones in the front.
  • Change stored food and water supplies every six months. Be sure to write the date you store it on all containers.
  • Re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family needs change.
  • Keep items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers, such as an unused trashcan, camping backpack, or duffel bag.

How Much Water Do We Need?

You should have at least a three-day supply of water and store at least one gallon of water per person per day. A normally active person needs at least one-half gallon of water daily just for drinking. Those who work out or are conditioned may drink up to a gallon a day.
Additionally, in determining adequate quantities, take the following into account:

  • Individual needs vary, depending on age, physical condition, activity, diet, and climate.
  • Children, nursing mothers, and ill people need more water.
  • Very hot temperatures can double the amount of water needed.
  • A medical emergency might require additional water.
  • Store extra water for cleaning the body, brushing teeth, making tea/coffee.

How Should I Store Water?
The best quality water at the most economical price comes from purchasing your own water filtration system. It’s important to use a water storage container that is designed to store drinking water. If you do not have your own filter at home, you can purchase commercially filtered water at most local health food stores and for last resort, you can buy pre-bottled water. Keep bottled water in its original container and do not open it until you need to use it. Observe the expiration or “use by” date.
Though we don’t recommend drinking water that has been stored in conventional plastic containers or bottles, sometimes it’s the only solution available and is obviously better than having no water.
Purchase stainless steel personal water bottles for each person in household, sanitize, rinse and fill with filtered water. Label each bottle with name and refresh date.

Water Storage Prep

To prepare safest and most reliable emergency supply of water, it’s best to have or purchase your own water filtration system.  We recommend you purchase food-grade water storage containers from surplus or camping supplies stores to use for water storage. This is crucial to the health-quality of your water because many plastic containers will leak gases and resin into your water, contaminating it with toxins. (see NLS suggested products list for recommendations)

Before filling with water, thoroughly clean the containers with natural dishwashing soap (Dr. Bronners Sal Suds) and water, and rinse completely so there is no residual soap. Follow directions below on filling the container with water. Label the container with date you filled the water, rotate every 3-6 months and refill with fresh purified water.

Do not use: plastic jugs, 2-liter bottles or cardboard containers that have had milk or fruit juice in them. Milk protein and fruit sugars cannot be adequately removed from these containers and provide an environment for bacterial growth when water is stored in them. Cardboard containers also leak easily and are not designed for long-term storage of liquids. Also, we recommend that you do not use glass containers because they can break, do not travel easily and are heavy.

Filling Water Containers
Tightly close the container using the original cap. Be careful not to contaminate the cap by touching the inside of it with your finger.
Place a date on the outside of the container so that you know when you filled it.
Store in a cool, dark place.
Schedule/Set an alarm to replace the water every six months, if using high-grade storage unit, or 3 months if other than recommended product is used.

Keep Your Water Fresh
You will need to replace the water in your container every 3-6 months depending on the quality of plastic or metal container, purity of water, where and how it is stored. For new and re-used containers, sanitize the inside by adding a solution of 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar and 1 teaspoon of baking soda to a quart of water. Swish the sanitizing solution in the bottle so that it touches all surfaces. After sanitizing the bottle, dump out the sanitation solution and thoroughly rinse the container with clean water a couple times, then your ready to fill the unit.

Food and Supplies

  • Stock at least a 10-day supply of non-perishable food per person, 30-day is recommended
  • Store food in air-tight, durable containers to keep bugs and rodents out (large plastic boxes are perfect)
  • Select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking and little or no water.
  • Select food items that are compact and lightweight.
  • Avoid foods that will make you thirsty. Choose salt-free crackers, whole grain cereals, and canned foods with high liquid content.

Pet Preparedness

If you evacuate your home, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND! Pets most likely cannot survive on their own; and if by some remote chance they do, you may not be able to find them when you return.
For additional information, please contact The Humane Society of the United States.

Take pet food, bottled water, medications, veterinary records, cat litter/pan, can opener, food dishes, first aid kit and other supplies with you in case they’re not available later. While the sun is still shining, consider packing a “pet survival” kit which could be easily deployed if disaster hits.
Make sure identification tags are up to date and securely fastened to your pet’s collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. Make sure you have a current photo of your pet for identification purposes.
Make sure you have a secure pet carrier, leash or harness for your pet so that if he panics, he can’t escape. Animals in Emergencies for Owners This video, developed by the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program (CSEPP) /FEMA, is intended to help pet and livestock owners prepare to protect their animals during emergencies.

The Food Freedom Movement has begun!

Sustainable Agriculture

The Food Freedom Movement

Are you concerned about our food supply and your access to clean, healthy food? You’re not alone. More people are becoming aware that Big Corporate Agriculture is controlling food policies coming out of Washington, D.C. They are forcing their “Food like substances”, as Michael Pollan puts it in Food, Inc., down our throats by taking away our rights to healthier, cleaner choices.

Recently, 3 Raw Food establishments in L.A. were raided by a combined force of agents from the FDA, Dept of Agriculture, CDC and the LA County Sheriff’s office for…get this: sell RAW MILK! They are being charged with “‘conspiracy’ related to the sell of unpasteurized raw milk products. Feds not only seized cash and raw milk supplies (much of which was also dumped out) but also mangos and other fresh, organic produce.”

http://www.infowars.com/raw-food-raid-armed-agents-bust-raw-milk-cheese-sellers/

This happened on the same day that Mega-corporate food processor, Cargill, announced a recall of 36 million pounds of ground turkey because of salmonella contamination. One person died and almost 100 were sickened from salmonella poisoning, but there was no raid, no confiscation of cash or products, no fines, and no one went to jail or is even being investigated. A week later there was another big recall, this time for beef. Still, no raids, no confiscations, no fines. No one was sickened from any products from the Raw Food establishments, but 3 people went to jail and now face prosecutions and fines.  This is a glaring example of how Big Ag now controls our food policies and government agencies are their enforcement arms. This is “Food Fascism”!

So what can we do about this? There is a “Food Freedom” movement that has started because of Documentaries like “Food, Inc.”, “The World According to Monsanto”, “Fresh”, and the new one “Farmageddon”, and the illegal raids on raw food providers.  These documentaries are bringing to light the dangers of corporate controlled agriculture as well as some solutions to bring clean, healthy food back to the market. Stevens County, WA, has started the movement to Food Freedom!

In Stevens County they recently passed an Ordinance that declares:

“BE IT ORDAINED BY STEVENS COUNTY: That the people of the State of Washington, domiciled on Stevens county, have unalienable and fundamental rights and among those rights are the rights to choose the local foods they produce; process or prepare; sell, purchase, or distribute; preserve and store for extended periods of time; and consume, for food or drink, for people or other life forms.”

They go on to declare that they have to Right to grow food locally like they have been doing for over 150 years!

“WHEREAS, We find that family farms, traditional agricultural practices, and processing or preparing local foods by individuals, families, or a group of people, offer stability to our rural way of life by enhancing the local economic, environmental and social wealth of our community, thus promoting self-reliance, the preservation of family farms, and local food traditions; and “WHEREAS, We find the history of government regulators, even with hundreds of food regulations on the books, shows they are incapable of protecting citizens from exposure to food poisoning events from foods produced by corporate farming; and “And what is their source for declaring this right? The Constitution! Both the Constitution of the United States and their State Constitution. “WHEREAS, We, the people of the State of Washington domiciled on Stevens county, declare:

1. The Tenth Amendment to the Constitution for the United States, states, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people”; and 2. That pursuant to Article 1, Section 8, of the Constitution for the United States, there is no power granted to the federal government to regulate local foods on Stevens county; and “And how will they make sure this is enforced locally? “(D)(1) Public employees employed at the federal, state, or local levels, including, but not limited to, agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security, Food and Drug Administration, Washington state Patrol, sheriff’s departments, and municipal and county police will not enforce or attempt to enforce the federal laws, etc., referred to in (A) subsections (1) and (2); or treaties referred in (B) subsections (1) and (2); or Washington state laws, etc., referred in (C) subsections (1) and (2); and (2) A violation of subsection (D)(1) is a class B felony (as defined at RCW 9A.20.021(1)(b)) and is punishable by confinement in a state correctional institution for a term fixed by the court not to exceed ten (10) years, or by a fine in an amount fixed by the court not to exceed twenty thousand dollars ($20,000), or by both such confinement and fine; and”

Imagine if we were to adopt this ordinance in our own county. What would be the benefits for us on a local level?

  • We would be able to grow more Organic produce without the expense and burdens of unjust and unnecessary regulations coming from the stare and federal level.
  • We would have access to cleaner, healthier, more nutrient dense food.
  • We would keep more of our money in the local economy.
  • We would create more jobs locally by creating a demand for local produce.
  • Small farms and family farms would thrive.
  • It would unite our local populations around a common purpose and a common goal.
  • It would develop a stronger sense of community.
  • More sustainable businesses would attracted here because of the local populations support of local businesses…and bring more jobs with them!
  • Our local police and judicial systems would have a REAL Mission: to protect the local citizens from the corrupt Corporations, State, and Federal Government!

These are just a few of the benefits that an ordinance like this could have. The only way we can take back our Rights and Freedoms is declare this on the local level. It is the local level where we find our commUNITY.

There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come”!  Victor Hugo

This idea’s time has come. Here is a link to this ordinance you can download as a PDF. Gather your people, create your plan, and take this to your local city and county officials and tell them you want this passed because this is for our community. Invite your local Police and Judicial systems to join us, because without them we cannot achieve our goals here.

5 Easy Tips for Healthy Summer Fun

5 Easy Tips for Healthy Summer Fun, Naturally!

Family get togethers always bring out the appetite for Mom’s apple pie, Grandma’s potato salad and Dad’s famous grilling! Outdoor cooking and eating is one of the many reasons we love summer. Over the years, these holiday picnic have become more wasteful and more unhealthy with flavored chips, instant dips, processed meats, bleached bread, and briquettes loaded with enough fuel to burn all night long… now really, that can’t be good to inhale or ingest!

There are many hidden dangers with the American way of grill-eating that we can avoid with a few simple changes in the products we use. Also, there are many ‘green’ goods to use instead of trashing paper & plastic wares.  Here are a few tips and suggestions for a Healthy & Happy summer holiday!

1)   Use wood chips or charcoal that have not been soaked in fuels. I know you are all used to the instant everything world, but there is no point in eating your food at all if it’s been cooked in fuel fumes – so take a little time to start the fire earlier, get the chips going, then add charcoal or bigger chips and let the natural hot coals and embers flavor your meat and veggies naturally! You’ll love the different in taste and texture too

2)   Try Turkey, Chicken, Tofu, or Temphe burgers instead of red-meat. With so many great Organic farms and brands available, we have healthy options right under our noses!

3)   Baked chips are everywhere now, just be careful to avoid toxins in the flavored chips. MSG is in most ‘flavored’ products, so read the labels before you buy and beware of hidden chemicals like MSG, dyes, and preservatives.

4)   Serve and eat fruit first! Watermelon, strawberries, peaches and more! Make a fruit salad or bring a basket of fresh fruit. Eating fruit before heavy meats and starches will help reduce over-eating, keeping your energy up to play with kids!

5)   Drink purified water and drop the plastic bottle habit! Many people think that if they’re drinking any liquid, that it counts as water intake…wrong! Juices, teas, sodas, and anything with alcohol, caffeine, or sugar is dehydrating your body.

Now remember, these are just a few simple tips you can do to get your summer fun on a naturally healthy track. Be informed, ask questions and stay tuned for more healthy living tips and recipes in the NLS Newsletter ~ Sign up Today!

Holistic Heartworm Prevention

Mosquito season is just around the corner, and that means you need to protect your dogs from heart-worms!
These are parasites that are transmitted by mosquitoes and enter the bloodstream as larvae then migrate to the heart. Six months after reaching the heart, the larvae turn into adults, and that is when problems begin. The heart will eventually be filled with full-grown heartworms, blocking the flow of blood to the lungs and severely damaging the heart. The heart has already been damaged by the time you see symptoms. Your veterinarian can perform a simple fecal test to determine if your pet is free of heartworm infestation. However, many veterinarians will recommend a daily or monthly pill to prevent heartworms. This pill could do more harm than good!

Heartworm medications are designed to stop the heartworm larvae from becoming adults. This is not an accurate definition of prevention. The chemical insecticides contained in these drugs, administered over a period of time, can cause serious side-effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and convulsions. You pet’s immune system is weakened by the toxins in the pills, and the liver and kidneys become overworked from trying to eliminate the poisons from the body. This undue stress makes the pet’s body too weak and your pet becomes ill more easily. Holistic vets, such as Dr. Jeffrey Levy, believe that the long-term use of heartworm prevention drugs are a link in the chain of diseases such as arthritis, liver and kidney diseases, skin allergies, and many types of degenerative problems.

Mosquitoes still bite animals on heartworm medication.
The key is to get the blood of the pet in a healthy enough condition that the mosquitoes are uninterested. Feed your dog wholesome food, free of artificial additives and preservatives. Mosquitoes are a parasite. Herbs, such as spearmint and turmeric, have anti-parasitic properties that discourage not only mosquitoes, but fleas and ticks also. Geranium, tea tree, and lavender essential oils repel mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. Use these oils topically after bath time and before going outside. Do not use essential oils on cats; however, neem oil is safe for use on both dogs and cats, and is very effective. Also, keep your yard mosquito free with cedar mulch.

You should feel comfortable discussing holistic and integrative medicine with your vet. Weigh your options and make the best informed decision for your pet’s health and overall well-being.

The best defense against any disease is a happy, healthy pet!

How to Care for Teething Puppies with Natural Remedies

Puppies, just like human babies, go through a teething process that can be very painful at times.
For about the first 9 months of your puppy’s life, he/she will be in the process of teething. Puppies will chew anything in sight to dull the pain they are experiencing. Responsible pet-parents need to address teething issues before furniture and shoes become your furry little friend’s favorite chew toys.

Starting at around two weeks of age, puppies begin to get their baby teeth; by the time your puppy is 12 weeks old, he/she will have all of them.
Not long after the last baby teeth are in, the puppy will begin to lose them and new, permanent teeth will take their place. As the new teeth come in, the puppy might experience redness, swelling and irritation. You should take measures to alleviate your puppy’s pain and reduce the risk of him/her chewing up valuable items while teething.

Provide your puppy with acceptable items to chew on.
While the new teeth are putting pressure on the puppy’s gums, chewing is a natural reaction. If you don’t provide a chew toy, your puppy will look for something else to chew, including furniture, shoes and other things you value. The use of natural chewing deterrents like Bitter Lime or Bitter Apple can be applied to furniture and objects you don’t want Fido sinking his teeth into. Offer your puppy only one or two chew toys. If you supply too many chew toys, your puppy may not distinguish them from other things that seem chewable.

Place any tempting items out of reach. Remove the remote, socks, shoes and books. Keep electrical wires away from your puppy. Chewing on the wires could be fatal.  However, do not punish your puppy for chewing on items in your home. If you catch your puppy chewing on something inappropriate say “No” or “Leave it” in a firm voice. Remove the item and immediately hand them something acceptable for chewing. When they take the new item, praise them.

Enhance your puppy’s desire to chew on his designated toy by rubbing a small amount of Foxy Treats’ Skin&Coat Supplement on it once or twice a day.
Puppies enjoy the taste, and the Omega-3 content in the oil will help with inflammation in the mouth. You can switch up the flavor  occasionally by rubbing a tiny amount of peanut butter onto the chew toy to keep your puppy interested. Do not use too much peanut butter, it will upset your puppy’s digestion.

Natural Teething Aids:
Frozen Foxy Treats! Puppies love the crunchy goodness, and the icy chill will help soothe swollen gums. The Lavender Mint treats make for an excellent teething aid.  Lavender is very calming and soothing.
Ice cubes: drop one or two ice cubes into your puppy’s food bowl. (Crushed ice for toy breeds.) The ice will melt and slip back into the bowl as he/she works on it, but it will provide soothing relief for irritated gums while it lasts.
Frozen chamomile tea and aloe vera juice is an excellent teething aid: it’s tasty and soothing. Both chamomile and aloe vera are natural anti-inflammatory agents and will ease the irritation your puppy is experiencing.

Freeze a clean dishrag after dipping it in water-or chamomile tea–and wringing it out. Twist the damp dishrag into a tight, rope-like shape and let it freeze that way. When your puppy shows signs of needing to chew, offer the frozen rag to chill and temporarily numb his gum pain. When the rag warms and softens, you can rinse it out and refreeze it.

While sitting with your puppy, use one hand to support his/her chin while gently rubbing the upper and lower gums for a few minutes.
Gently massaging the gums will giving your puppy some much needed comfort. You can rub ice cubes onto the gums as well

Maintenance is of Key Importance

Purchase stainless steel personal water bottles for each person in household, sanitize, rinse and fill with filtered water. Label each bottle with name and refresh date.

Preparation

To prepare safest and most reliable emergency supply of water, it’s best to have or purchase your own water filtration unit. We recommend you purchase food-grade water storage containers from surplus or camping supplies stores to use for water storage. This is crucial to the health-quality of your water because many plastic containers will leak gases and resin into your water, contaminating it with toxins. (see suggested products list for recommendation)

Before filling with water, thoroughly clean the containers with dishwashing soap and water, and rinse completely so there is no residual soap. Follow directions below on filling the container with water. Label the container with date you filled the water, rotate every 3-6 months and refill with fresh purified water.

Do not use not plastic jugs, 2-liter bottles or cardboard containers that have had milk or fruit juice in them.

Food
